Federal Government responds to Council letter on rail safety

Earlier this year, I, along with fellow City Councillors representing wards along the CP rail corridor, wrote to Transport Minister Marc Garneau. We asked for action on the part of the federal government to keep our communities safe from the threat of derailments of rail cars carrying dangerous goods. Today we received Minister Garneau's response through the Mayor's office. The letter summarizes a number of regulatory changes made under the previous government, and includes a commitment to consult with communities and an acknowledgement that "there is still much work to be done." It also references the $143 Million (over three years) in Budget 2016 "to increase inspection capacity and provide first responders with better tools and information to protect communities."

The issue of rail safety remains a priority for our community and I will continue to work with Safe Rail Communities and our local MP to ensure our neighbourhoods are safe.
