After a tremendous amount of work from the resident-driven Community Liaison Committee, the proposal for the Runnymede Shelter came back to Committee in September through a staff report that included a number of new recommendations and changes. The report was adopted unanimously at City Council on October 5.
The staff report recommends a 24-hour, 50-bed men's shelter be developed at 731 Runnymede Road with on-site counselling in housing and employment to address the needs of those in our community experiencing homelessness. The Community Liaison Committee will continue to meet to help guide the development of the shelter and City Staff are currently negotiating the lease with the building owner. The shelter is expected to open in late 2017.
